About Homebirth
Homebirth is a wonderful, safe alternative to
hospital birth. Healthy women have a lower risk
of interventions, including episiotomy, epidural,
surgical abdominal delivery (cesarean section),
forceps, and vacuum extraction when they choose
homebirth. Yet, homebirth is as safe as hospital
birth for low-risk pregnancies when attended by
certified professional midwives (CPMs), like myself.
This information is supported my numerous international
studies, including a comprehensive
study of North American planned homebirths attended
by CPMs that was published in the British Medical
Journal (Johnson & Davis, 2005). At home, women
have the added benefit of privacy, intimacy, environmental
familiarity, and home comforts. The baby is never
taken from the mother's room. Moreover, the baby
and mother can remain in the comfort of their home,
the place of birth, throughout the early postpartum
period. High breastfeeding success and maternal
satisfaction are nearly universal in homebirths
attended by CPMs. |
